About Rother District
Situated in East Sussex, on the south coast, Rother is one of the most beautiful districts in the UK. It surrounds the borough of Hastings and borders Kent to the north and east and Wealden District to the west.
It covers an area of 200 square miles and includes coastal towns, rural villages and the High Weald. It contains the historic market towns of Battle and Rye, seaside town of Bexhill and the wonderful Camber coast.
There are several main road links across the district, including the A21 London to Hastings route, and the A259 coastal route to Eastbourne and further west.
Its train services link Bexhill to Hastings and Ashford, to London, and to Eastbourne and Brighton. It has good bus links between the main towns and has long distance footpaths including the Sussex Border Path and 1066 Country Walk.
Culture and nature
Rich in history and culture, the district was the site of arguably the most important battle in English history – the Battle of Hastings. Battle Abbey and Bodiam Castle are just two of the must-see historic sites.

Camber sands is our stunning stretch of sandy beach – it’s the perfect get-away with unspoilt views of sand and sea stretching for miles – famous for the long ridges of sand dunes leading down to soft golden sands.
The art scene centres around the iconic De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill, Originally conceived as a ‘People’s Palace’, this experiment in democratic social enterprise is the prototype for the modern cultural centre and the blueprint for the Southbank. The venue draws in thousands of people every year to enjoy famous national and international artists.
The district enjoys many festivals throughout the year including Bexhill After Dark, Rye Arts Festival, Rye Bay Scallop Festival, and the Battle of Hastings re-enactment. The area also plays a big part in Sussex Bonfire with established societies including Battle and Rye.
